Understanding DNS and Managing DNS Records with TrexHost

DNS, short for Domain Name System, is a fundamental part of the internet. It converts easy-to-remember domain names into numerical IP addresses, allowing browsers and servers worldwide to locate websites quickly and accurately. With TrexHost, DNS management is simple, secure, and efficient—helping ensure your website and email services remain accessible at all times.

How DNS Works

When someone types a domain name into a web browser, a request is sent to locate the authoritative name server for that domain. This name server responds with information stored in the domain’s DNS zone, directing the browser to the correct server.

For example, a domain such as trexhost.net may resolve to an IP address like 192.168.0.1. Every domain and subdomain requires an A (IP) record to function properly on the internet. With TrexHost, creating and managing these records is quick and straightforward using our easy-to-use control panel.

Managing DNS Records with TrexHost

All DNS records can be managed directly from My Domains > DNS Records in the TrexHost Control Panel. This centralized interface allows you to control every aspect of your domain’s DNS configuration without advanced technical knowledge. Whether you’re making a simple update or configuring advanced records, TrexHost provides a reliable and user-friendly experience.

Types of DNS Records Available at TrexHost

TrexHost supports all essential DNS record types, including:

  • A Record (Address Record)
Connects a domain or subdomain to an IPv4 address. This is the most common DNS record used to point a hostname to a server.
  • AAAA Record (IPv6 Address Record)
Maps a domain or hostname to an IPv6 address, supporting modern networking standards alongside IPv4.
  • CNAME Record (Canonical Name Record)
Creates an alias that points one domain name to another, inheriting the target domain’s DNS settings.
  • MX Record (Mail Exchange Record)
Specifies the mail servers responsible for handling email for your domain. TrexHost ensures secure and reliable email routing.
  • NS Record (Name Server Record)
Identifies which name servers are authoritative for your domain.
  • SRV Record (Service Record)
Used for defining services such as VoIP or messaging platforms, enabling more advanced service configurations.
  • TXT Record (Text Record)
Stores text-based data commonly used for domain verification, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and other authentication purposes.

How to Change Domain Name Servers on TrexHost

To change the name servers (NS) of a domain name, you must do so through the domain registrar where the domain is currently registered.

If your domain is registered with TrexHost, you can easily update its name servers using the Domain Manager in the TrexHost Control Panel (My Domains → Registered Domains). There are three ways to change name servers:

Option 1: Change Name Servers for One or Multiple Domains

  1. In the Registered Domains list, select one or more domains by checking the checkbox in front of the domain name.
  2. Click the Change Name Servers button.

You will be redirected to a page where you can enter the new name servers.
Once finished, click the Change NSes button to apply the changes.

Important: This option allows you to change the name servers for multiple TrexHost domains at the same time.

Option 2: Change Name Servers Using the NS Status Icon

  1. Locate the domain in your TrexHost Registered Domains list.
  2. In the Edit NameServers/WHOIS column, click the Edit Name Servers icon.

A pop-up window will appear with two options:

  • Edit name server settings
  • Register private name servers

Select Edit name server settings to proceed. You will be redirected to the same page used in Option 1.
Enter the new name servers and click Change NSes to save the changes.

For details on registering private name servers, please refer to the TrexHost article: How to Register Custom Name Servers for a Domain Name at TrexHost

Option 3: Change Name Servers from Domain Details

  1. In the Domain column, click the domain name you want to update.
  2. The Domain Information pop-up window will open.
  3. Go to the DNS Servers & Settings tab.
  4. Click the Register/Edit Name Servers link.

In the Change NS tab of the Manage DNS window, enter your new name server information and click the Change NSs button.

Important Notes

  • Name server changes may take up to 24 hours to fully propagate worldwide.
  • During this time, your website and email services hosted with TrexHost may temporarily appear inconsistent.

How to Edit MX Records for Your Domain at TrexHost

By default, each domain hosted on TrexHost comes with two MX records that point to our mail servers. These ensure that emails sent to your domain are correctly routed to TrexHost’s mail system.

If you have your own mail server or prefer to use a third-party email service, you will need to update the MX records to point to the external mail server’s MX records.

How to Edit MX Records on TrexHost

  1. Log in to your TrexHost Control Panel and go to My Domains > DNS Records.
  2. Locate the domain you want to modify from the list and click on it to expand its DNS details.
  3. Replace the existing mx1 and mx2 entries with the MX records provided by your external mail service.
  4. Set the priority values:
    • Highest priority = 1
    • Lowest priority = 100
  5. Once you’ve made the changes, click Modify to save the updated MX records.

Note: Changes to MX records may take some time to propagate globally, depending on DNS caching.

Using TrexHost’s intuitive control panel makes it easy to manage MX records and route emails to the service of your choice while keeping your domain fully functional.

Understanding Domain Name WHOIS Privacy Protection

WHOIS privacy protection (also called WHOIS ID Protection) is an optional service available for certain domain TLDs such as .com, .net, .biz, .org, .info, .we.bs, .me, .tv, .cc, and .asia. Please note that some domains, including .us, .uk, and .com.au, do not support this service at the top-level.

When you register a domain, you provide personal and/or business contact details, including your name, address, phone number, and email. This information is stored in the WHOIS record of your domain.

A domain’s WHOIS record contains:

  • Domain details (registration date, expiration date, and current name servers)
  • Registrant, administrative, technical, and billing contact information

By default, WHOIS records are publicly accessible, meaning anyone can view the information associated with a registered domain. This public access can expose your personal contact information to spammers, telemarketers, or other malicious actors.

How WHOIS Privacy Protection Works

The WHOIS privacy protection service conceals your personal data by replacing your contact information with our company’s contact details in the public WHOIS record. This ensures your personal information remains private while you continue to retain full ownership of your domain. The service does not affect your legal rights as the domain owner.

How to Enable WHOIS Privacy Protection

  1. Log in to your TrexHost Control Panel and go to My Domains > Registered Domains.
  2. In the domains list, locate the domain you want to protect. Click the icon in the WHOIS Privacy Protection column.
  3. A pop-up window will appear, showing:
    • Details about the WHOIS Privacy Protection service
    • Pricing
    • Available payment options
  4. Select your preferred payment method and click Continue to go to the payment page, where you can complete your purchase.

Important Note:
Providing false information in the WHOIS record is illegal and may lead to cancellation of your domain. Using false details is not a substitute for WHOIS privacy protection.

By enabling WHOIS privacy protection, you keep your personal information secure while maintaining full control and ownership of your domain.

How to Change the WHOIS Details of a Domain Name at TrexHost

Most domain name types (TLDs) that we register offer the option to change these contact details.

You can do that from the Registered Domains section (My Domains > Registered Domains) of your Control Panel.

OPTION 1:

In the table of registered domains, search for the ‘eye’ icon ( ) in the Edit DNS/Whois column pertaining to the domain the Whois data of which you want to edit.

Click on the icon and you will be forwarded to a form where you can input new contact information for each section – registrant, billing, administrative and technical.

Once you fill out the registrant section, and if you want to use the same contact information for all the other sections, there is an option to copy the same information in the other sections as well.

As soon as you are ready with all the changes in all the sections of the WHOIS record, simply press the Save Information button at the bottom of the page and that will update the WHOIS record for you.

You should see a message The details have been modified successfully! to confirm that.

Please have in mind that WHOIS changes may require up to 24 hours to update worldwide.

OPTION 2:

Tick the checkbox next to the domain that you want to edit, then click on the “Change WHOIS” button that is located just above the domains.

Then follow the edit-Whois steps as described in Option 1 above:

Edit WHOIS

Through this option, you can also edit the Whois data of multiple domains at a time.

NOTE: Keep in mind that the contact details of some TLDs (.co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .ca, .eu, .be, .at). cannot be changed.

Others require a manual change, so if you encounter any error message, you can contact us by opening a ticket from Help Center -> Open Support Ticket in the top-right corner of your Control Panel or the button below.

Please be informed that the WHOIS record is public and anyone on the web can look up the WHOIS record of any domain name that is currently registered. This exposes your personal contact details, incl. name, address, etc. to the public. If you want to purchase the WHOIS ID protection service that helps hide your personal data and protect it from malicious use such as spam emails and telemarketing, please refer to the Understanding Domain Name WHOIS Privacy Protection article.

Have in mind that providing false contact information in the WHOIS record is considered illegal and may result in cancellation of the domain registration. Therefore that is not an alternative to the WHOIS ID protection service.
